leadership

Leadership is on my mind these days. Partially because of the fracas at Lamoille South Supervisory Union, and my sense that it didn’t have to turn out this way with recent “firings” including Pat Hannafin, and Mark Newton. Also part of the picture is the Todd Geraci issue. Perhaps that is the one that is the most public. The fact that Todd was able to attend the Graduation Ceremony - because the rules were not clear, or because the Court ordered it is simply not the point. Nor is the point that Mark Newton was fired, then rehired. It’s really about the way these things happened and how they tore at the fabric of the community.

So, how did they happen? I don’t know. All I know that oddly someone had to go to court to allow Todd Geraci to participate in graduation. That can only be because of poor communication and poor leadership on the part of the Supervisory Union. What made Anthony go to court? What drove fifty or sixty highly respected highly performing high school students march in the parade, enraged about the firing? What’s the deal with the performance evaluations delivered so late, and the radically different nature of it all?

I guess my sense at this point is that the behind the scenes work that resulted in the firing, in the refusal to allow Geraci to walk the stage - are far far more significant than the outcomes. Unfortunately they are also secrets - confidential. But my sense is that if the outcomes were so significantly disruptive to the community, then somewhere there is a lack of leardership, emotional intelligence, experience - I don’t know what - that I hope doesn’t keep presenting in community damaging outcomes.
